Homeowners should be cognizant of mold growth after a winter storm. The best way to prevent mold damage from melting snow and ice is to check the construction and condition of your home after the storm hits. Checking for winter storm damage on the outside of your house can prevent damaging molds from spreading into your home. Follow the checklist below to help prevent Mold Damage to your home. Roof
- Do you have any loose/missing shingles? If so then you need to get them repaired.
- Leaks are particularly common around chimneys, plumbing vents and attic vents.
- Check the flashing of your fireplace to see if water has entered in.
- Check the seals around your skylights to ensure you don’t have areas that water can get in.
- Trim any tree limbs that are brushing against your roof or are at risk of falling through your roof should they break during a storm.
- Inspect the upstairs attic to verify you have no leaks or moisture damage that can stain ceilings.
Gutters & Downspouts
- Are gutters and downspouts correctly attached to your roof?
- Make sure your downspouts are clear of leaves and twigs.
- If your downspouts aren’t plumbed into your storm sewer, be sure that they empty away from the foundation of your home.
- If you have standing water around your foundation or your crawl space, consider getting a sump pump to move the water out of the area.
Siding, Windows & Doors
- Inspect siding to ensure no areas have come loose.
- Check your door and window seals and outside caulking to ensure no water leakage.
- Check for peeling paint, which can be a sign of water getting into the wood.
- On the inside of your windows, wipe up any window condensation in the sliding track to avoid mold growth, particularly with metal windows.
- Consider replacing metal windows and exterior door thresholds with vinyl to help prevent leakage of both air and water.
Basement
- Make sure there is no moisture seepage and that all walls and floors are dry, if you have a basement.
- Consider purchasing a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the area.
- Seal any cracks and holes in external walls, joints and foundations
